As a homeowner, the first thought is to do it yourself. Still, it can be counterproductive as you need expertise, the right tools, and above all, to be very careful.

Depending on the level of damage, you might be able to do the shingle repair in Austin by yourself and obtain a good outcome. In this article, we give you some tips and ways you can repair your roof’s asphalt shingles. Keep reading!

8 Steps To Repair Your Roof’s Asphalt Shingles

Before starting, be aware of how many damaged shingles there are; if the amount is minimal, you can follow these steps to restore them and avoid a complete roof replacement:

  • Step 1 – Check the Weather Report Before You Begin

Be careful, and avoid doing it in rainy seasons or strong winds, as it can cause more damage: not only to your roof, but to yourself.

  • Step 2 – You Need the Right Tools and Materials

You will need a flat bar, asphalt roofing cement, spare shingles, and roofing nails, considering that the repair is minimal and easy to do.

  • Step 3 – Remove the Damaged Shingles

Use the flat bar to separate the damaged shingles from the surrounding shingles. If it is only slightly damaged, lift the loose portion and spread a layer of asphalt roofing cement under it.

  • Step 4 – Remove the Nails

Remove the nails under the shingles to remove the shingles easily and carefully remove all damaged shingles.

  • Step 5 – Remove the Old Shingle

Once the old shingle is off, slide the new shingle on. If the old shingle doesn’t slide off, don’t force it. It is better to call a professional roofer than to cause damage to other areas of your roof.

  • Step 6 – Nail the Shingle

Be sure to use waterproof roofing nails, as these will last longer, even when exposed to the elements. Also, use at least four nails to nail the new shingle.

  • Step 7 – Seal the Space Around the Nails

After you have nailed the shingles, apply sealant around the nails to seal against water leakage.

  • Step 8 – Glue the Underside of the Shingles

Apply it along the entire length of the underside of the shingles and press down.
