Nowhere else we work has a tree that interferes with a roof inspection the way the loblolly pines do here. Needles collect in the valleys and behind chimney crickets, mat down, hold moisture against the shingles, and — the part that matters after a storm — cover the exact surfaces where hail evidence sits. The needles also break the usual shortcut diagnosis. Most roofers judge hail partly by granule accumulation in the gutters. In Bastrop the gutters are packed with pine litter that traps and conceals those granules, so the roof reads clean from the ground when it is not.
