Round Rock Has the Worst Hail Record in Central Texas

That is not a figure of speech. On the evening of 24 September 2023, this town absorbed a sequence of stones that peaked at four inches — softball size — with a damage figure attached to it. Several reports in the same run exceeded three inches. The full logged timeline is set out on our Round Rock storm damage page.

Four inches is softball size. Central Texas hail is usually pea to quarter, occasionally golf ball. This was a different physical event altogether, and if your roof was on the house that night it is the single most important date in its history.

Big Hail Leaves Different Evidence

A quarter-size stone bruises a shingle — a soft circular spot you find by touch, not by eye. A four-inch stone does not bruise anything. It punches through the shingle and into the decking, splits rafters, destroys vent housings outright, and dents metal deeply enough to fracture the coating in a single strike.

That changes what an inspection is looking for. Instead of hunting bruises across a test square we are looking for punctures, split shingles, crushed vent housings, gutter runs deformed rather than dimpled, and — most importantly — fractured decking visible from underneath. Impact marks from hail that size are often visible from the ground, which is unusual and useful.

Damage Below the Shingle Is the Real Risk

A stone heavy enough to fracture decking leaves a roof that passes a shingle-only inspection and fails structurally a few years later. This is why, on any Round Rock roof that was in place in September 2023, we go into the attic in daylight and look up at the underside of the deck for cracks and pinholes of light.

A roof that was “repaired” after that storm by someone who only replaced shingles may still be carrying compromised decking underneath.

Why Claims From That Night Still Get Argued

Obvious damage does not mean a smooth claim. An event that concentrated brings catastrophe adjusters working at volume, and the disputes move from whether damage exists to scope: how many slopes, whether decking is included, whether metal damage is functional or cosmetic, what the code upgrades cost.

For any policy issued or renewed after 1 January 2026, Texas Senate Bill 458 requires an appraisal provision — a defined route for resolving a dispute about the amount of a loss rather than about coverage. That is precisely the kind of dispute a large-hail claim produces. It is on your declarations page.

Getting Documented

We photograph the field, the penetrations, the soft metals and the decking from beneath, and give you measurements and a written estimate in a form that survives a scope argument. If your roof predates September 2023 and has never been properly inspected, that is the place to start.

Storm dates and hail sizes on this page come from the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information Storm Events Database. That database records reports filed with the National Weather Service — a gap in it means nobody filed a report, not that no hail fell.
