Hail damage roof repair, Lockhart, TX. Documented inspections in a town that appears in the storm record by name, on a housing stock older than most of Central Texas.

Lockhart Is on the Record, Repeatedly

Most towns this size are invisible in the National Weather Service hail file. Lockhart is not. It appears by name, more than once, since 2020:

  • 27 May 2020. 1.50-inch in town at 19:32, then 2.00-inch at the municipal airport at 19:39 — seven minutes later, same storm, larger stones.
  • 4 May 2021. A pre-dawn line: 1.50-inch at Reedville at 05:52, 1.75-inch at Larremore at 06:25, then 1.00-inch at Lockhart at 09:13.
  • 21 March 2022. 1.25-inch at 23:13.
  • 22 May 2025. The county took 2.00-inch at Martindale and 1.50-inch at Maxwell that evening. Nothing was logged at Lockhart itself.

A nearby hail report provides regional context, but it does not establish the hail size or damage at a particular property. The absence of a report at an address also does not establish that the roof is undamaged. Assess the property’s observed condition and retain dated evidence.

An Older Housing Stock Than the Rest of the Region

Lockhart is built around a courthouse square that survived largely intact, with residential streets of late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century homes spreading out from it. That is a fundamentally different roof from a 2010s tract house thirty miles north.

Steeper pitches. More valleys. Dormers and decorative gables. Original board decking rather than plywood. And, in a great many cases, more than one layer of roofing added over the decades. Every one of those makes hail damage harder to read from the ground and harder to resolve with a patch.

What Age Changes About a Caldwell County Claim

Two things come up again and again on older Lockhart roofs. The first is matching: discontinued shingle profiles and colors mean a partial repair may not match what is already up there, which is a scope conversation worth having at the start rather than discovering at delivery. The second is layers — a second roof installed over the original changes what a repair can achieve and changes what an adjuster is actually looking at when they get up there.

Neither of those is a reason to hold back. Both are reasons to have the roof properly documented before anybody makes a decision about it.

How We Inspect an Old Roof

Original decking and multiple layers mean we work carefully and slowly, photograph each slope as its own record, and look at the underside wherever we can get to it. Attic decking and rafters tell you things the surface will not.

Where a home sits inside a designated historic area, material and color choices can carry review requirements. We flag that at inspection rather than after the material is on the truck.
