Open Water Changes How Hail Hits

A storm crossing thirty miles of subdivisions is slowed by everything in its path. A storm crossing Lake Travis is slowed by nothing at all.

That has a specific effect on roofs along the shoreline: wind arrives at higher speed, and hail arriving with it comes in at a lower angle rather than falling more or less vertically. Low-angle hail concentrates on the elevation facing the water and can leave the opposite side of the same house genuinely untouched.

Two practical consequences. The damage is severe but one-sided, which produces the awkward outcome of an approved partial replacement and a visible color mismatch across your own roof. And an adjuster who places test squares on the sheltered elevation will find very little, which is why placement matters more here than almost anywhere.

What the Storm Record Shows

  • 23 May 2023. Two-inch hail at Jonestown at 17:15, with one-inch at 17:26.
  • 28 May 2025. 1.75-inch at Jonestown at 17:20 and 1.5-inch at Nameless at 16:56.
  • 5 May 2023. One-inch at Lago Vista, twice inside eight minutes.
  • 16 June 2023. 1.5-inch at Nameless and 1.25-inch at Travis Peak, in mid-June.
  • 11 May 2021. One-inch logged at Lake Travis.

Docks, Boathouses and Covered Slips

Waterfront properties here carry roofs the rest of Central Texas does not — boat dock covers, covered slips, shoreline pavilions. These are almost always light-gauge exposed-fastener metal on minimal framing, they take hail badly, and they are frequently the most damaged structure on a property.

They are also a coverage question worth asking before you file rather than after. Dock structures may fall under other structures coverage, may be scheduled separately, or may not be covered at all depending on the policy and whether the dock sits on leased LCRA shoreline. Worth reading your declarations page while nothing is urgent.

Booking Around the Lake

We inspect each elevation separately, note which faces the water, and cover the dock structures as their own scope with their own photographs.

Storm dates and hail sizes come from the NOAA Storm Events Database, which records reports filed with the National Weather Service. A gap in that record means nobody filed a report, not that no hail fell.
