San Marcos Has Been Hit Four Times in Five Years

Very few towns in Central Texas carry a record this dense. Since 2020 the National Weather Service file shows large hail at San Marcos on four separate days:

• 28 April 2021. 2.00-inch at 21:15, then 1.75-inch two minutes later.
• 2 March 2023. 1.75-inch at 03:56 — the middle of the night.
• 9 May 2024. The worst of them. 3.00-inch at 19:27, 2.50-inch at 19:29, 2.00-inch at 19:36 and again at 19:38. Elsewhere in Hays County that same evening: 3.00-inch at Mt Gaynor, 2.75-inch at Henly, 2.50-inch at Wimberley twice.
• 22 May 2025. 2.00-inch at 18:14, with 2.50-inch at Kyle nine minutes behind it.

That is not a run of bad luck. It is a pattern, and it is not finished.

Repeat Impacts Do Not Reset

A roof that took two-inch hail in 2021 and three-inch in 2024 did not experience two independent events. It is a roof carrying cumulative granule loss, mat bruising that has had three summers to work open, and sealant strips that have been broken and re-baked more than once.

This is why a San Marcos roof can look entirely serviceable from the street and then fail in the first hard rain after the next storm. The damage is layered, and each storm lands on a surface that is already weaker than it looks.

The Prior Damage Conversation in Hays County

With a record this dense, it is common for an inspection to turn up damage from more than one storm, and it is common for damage to be attributed to an earlier date. That is precisely why per-storm documentation is worth having, and why dated photographs from each event are worth keeping in a folder somewhere.

If you have never had the roof looked at after any of the four, the useful move is to get it documented now. A current, dated inspection establishes the condition of your roof as it stands today — and that is the one piece of evidence you cannot go back and create later.

Rental Property and Absentee Ownership

A large share of San Marcos housing is investor-owned and rented, and rental roofs are the ones that get looked at least. They are frequently the roofs carrying damage from all four storms at once, because nobody living under them has any reason to climb up.
