Hail Damage Repair

Hail inspections in Sunset Valley — the residential streets off Jones Road, and every roof out here carrying an array.

Hail damage roof repair, Sunset Valley, TX. Inspections on roofs that often carry a solar array, in a city that has spent years encouraging homeowners to put one up.

More Rooftop Solar Per Roof Than Almost Anywhere Nearby

Sunset Valley is about one square mile of city entirely surrounded by Austin, with a residential core of only a few hundred households. For years the city has run its own solar rebate program for residents, stacked on top of the utility incentive, along with rebates for solar water heating.

Small city, long-running program, and the result is a concentration of rooftop arrays that is unusual for Central Texas. That changes what a hail inspection is here. The array is not something sitting on the roof. It is bolted through it.

Hail, Panels, and the Roof Underneath Them

Panels are tempered glass and take direct impacts better than shingles do. What we look for on the array is cracked or spidered glass, dented frames, bent or displaced racking, and mounts that have loosened or lifted.

The larger issue is the part you cannot see. Hail bruises the exposed field of the roof while the covered area under the panels stays intact, so you finish a storm with a roof that is damaged in patches around an array — and with flashing at every penetration that has just been worked on by the same hail. A roof in that condition looks fine from the street and is not.

Sequencing a Claim With an Array on the Roof

If the roof needs replacing, the array comes off and goes back on. That is a real scope item with real labor in it, and it belongs in the documentation from the first inspection rather than surfacing halfway through the job. Get it written down early.

Two things are worth gathering while you are at it. Photograph the array and the roof as separate subjects, not as one picture. And pull your production data — a monitoring record showing output before and after the storm is unusually good evidence, and it is the kind of documentation almost nobody thinks to keep.

Travis County Reporting, and Why Sunset Valley Is Absent From It

No hail report has ever been logged at a Sunset Valley address in the National Weather Service record since 2020, which is what you would expect from a city of a few hundred households. Reports come from people, and there are not many people here to file them.

What the county record does show is that the storms have been arriving. 24 September 2023 put 2.25-inch stones at Camp Mabry and repeated two-inch reports across Austin the same evening, and it remains the costliest hail day in the county’s recent record. 9 April 2024 did it again, with 2.50-inch at Camp Mabry. Sunset Valley sits inside that footprint. It simply does not appear in the paperwork.

Getting a Documented Look

We inspect each slope and the array separately, photograph both, and provide the measurements and images in writing, whether or not there is a storm report at your address.
